Volunteer Opportunities

The Port Wentworth Leisure Services youth programs are made possible by the dedication and commitment of our volunteer coaches and team parents. The Port Wentworth Leisure Services Department offers a variety of sports programs for youth of all ages that are designed to promote  sportsmanship, development and fun.

Due to the onset of the Coronavirus COVID-19, strict measures have been put in place to protect the health and safety of Port Wentworth staff, volunteers and those participating in various leisure activities/youth sports. With this in mind, parents and youth participants are encouraged to read the City of Port Wentworth Leisure Services Department Plan for Returning to Play by clicking here. Team sports fees are $35 per participant for Port Wentworth residents and $65 per participant for non-residents. 

  • The City of Port Wentworth youth basketball program teaches technique, sportsmanship, fundamentals, and rules. It also gives our Port Wentworth youth the opportunity to learn competition.

    Micro basketball is offered for both girls and boys of all age groups and is played as a co-ed team. Practices are held twice a week and will be announced as teams are formed.

    Teams
    Micro Basketball for ages 3, 4 & 5 starts in the month of January.
    The 8 & under, 10 & under, 12 & under teams start the 3rd week of November.

  • Play Ball! The City of Port Wentworth Leisure Services Department offers a baseball, softball and t-ball league for ages 3 thru 15. All teams are played in conjunction with the Coastal Athlethic League

    The purpose of this program is to emphasize skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. Registration begins mid-January of each year.

    T-ball

    Age control dates: 
    Baseball is prior to May 1st.
    Softball is prior to January 1st. 

    Practice starts mid-March. Days and times will be announced through the coaches. 

    The City of Port Wentworth will provide games pants, jersey and hat. Players will need to bring their own glove and cleats. 

    Registration is $35 per player for Port Wentworth residents and $65 per player for non-residents.

  • The Port Wentworth Leisure Services Department offers a youth recreational cheerleading program for children ages 6 to 12 that is designed to support our youth football league.  

    The program is structured in a fun, non-competitive and recreational environment.  Each season begins in mid-August and continues through mid-November with games and practices primarily held at Mobley Park. 

    The age cutoff date is prior to August 1st.

    Practice starts the second week of August. Days and times will be announced through the coaches.

  • Experience one of the finest football leagues in the area!

    The Port Wentworth Patriots Youth Football program is available to children ages 7 to 12 and is organized to teach the basic fundamentals and knowledge of the game of football.

    The program promotes that all players in attendance at a game must execute a minimum of one play. Players are selected through a player placement workout, which creates parity throughout the league. 

    Each season begins in mid-August and continues through mid-November with games and practices primarily held at Mobley Park.

    Cost for the program is $35 per participant for Port Wentworth residents and $65 per participant for non-residents. This fee includes an official league jersey and athletic shorts. 

    The age cutoff date is prior to August 1st.

    The 2020 City of Port Wentworth Youth Football season home game schedule is listed below. All home games are played at Lewis C. Mobley Park Stadium, 303 Armadale Road, Port Wentworth, Georgia 31407.

    • Tuesday, October 20th 6:00 PM
  • Come join our youth soccer program for boys and girls ages 5 to 12 years old.  Players will improve their dribbling, shooting, passing, and teamwork.  

    The season runs from the end of August through the 1st week of November.

    Practice starts the second week of August. Days and times will be announced through the coaches.

  • The City of Port Wentworth offers a variety of sports clinics to Port Wentworth youth and those in neighboring cities. Programs are offered seasonally on a year-round basis.

  • The City of Port Wentworth offers a progressive approach to learning gymnastics through tumbling. We strive to develop healthy minds and bodies with skills and movements designed to build strength, flexibility and coordination.

    Instructor Kayla Vavrasek, former Elite Level Gymnast, has been offering tumbling and gymnastic programs for the Port Wentworth Leisure Services Department for more than 5 years. She has a gentle teaching style and works well with participants of all ages.

    Registration is accepted anytime during the session. The registration fee for Port Wentworth residents is $35.00 per child and $65.00 per child for non-residents. A $10.00 late fee will be assessed if registering after a session has started.

    Classes
    Beginner level ( no experience) classes for ages 5 to 7 are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and ages 8 to 12 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

    Intermediate level (can do a cartwheel with no problem) classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

    Registration is required to participate in each session. Class availability is on a first come, first served basis.

  • The City of Port Wentworth developed the youth volleyball team to provide young athletes with the opportunity to participate in an organized, local league that will introduce them to the competitive side of sports relative to playing time, rules, standings and player development.

    While emphasis will remain on basic fundamentals, sportsmanship, cooperative participation and socialization with peers, this program differs from recreational sports in that there are NO MANDATORY PLAYING TIME RULES.

    Teams will play 7 league games and participate in a single elimination tournament to conclude the season.

    The age cutoff date is prior to August 1st.

    Practice starts the 2nd week of August. Days and times will be announced through the coaches. All practices will be held in the P.B. Edwards, Jr. Gymnasium.

  • Youth Wrestling is a sport that will help develop agility, coordination, flexibility, balance, self-esteem, self-discipline, and a strong work ethic. The program is designed for boys ages 5 thru 14 and focuses on freestyle and folk style wrestling like seen in high school and college competitions.

    Wrestlers participating in the program must meet the weight requirement of 35lbs to 200lb. There will be in-house wrestling competitions as the students continue to learn beginner techniques and fundamentals.

    All children will face opponents who are similar in size.

    Practice days are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Community House, located at 300 Appleby Road Port Wentworth, Georgia 31407. During practice wrestlers are asked to dress in shorts, t-shirts and socks.

    Our coaching staff consists of past wrestlers with coaching experience.
